Listen Wider Challenge 2020

Playlists and Reading Lists for the Listen Wider Challenge

Challenge

5. A miniature composition under 90 seconds long

This week's challenge is all about the length of the work, but with no restrictions on time period, genre, or demographics. I chose classical music selections from the 19th and early 20th centuries (the Romantic period), because the miniature was in fashion in that period, especially among composers of piano music. In the spirit of the Listen Wider challenge, though, I tried to avoid the obvious candidates and selected miniature works from composers more known for their large-scale operas and symphonies-- like Rossini and Puccini-- as well as some lesser known composers-- like Erkel and Saeverud. Works by Ernst, Bruckner, and Tárrega go beyond the piano & vocal scoring typically associated with miniatures.

How I Found These

Although I used Spotify to make the playlist accessible, I found the pieces using the advanced search feature in NAXOS, one of the music streaming databases the UWM library subscribes to. I was able to search by duration, as well as time period, to gather pieces of less than 90 seconds from the Romantic period. NAXOS also allows you to create your own playlists, read liner notes, and access supplementary material like essays and aural training exercises.
