Listen Wider Challenge 2020

Playlists and Reading Lists for the Listen Wider Challenge

Challenge

  1. A piece by a composer from Central or South America

This is a broad one! Central and South America have rich musical histories, and there are thousands of composer who could qualify. For my playlist, I chose to focus on composers from the Late Baroque period, including secular music by composers like Sebastián de Aguirre, and sacred music by Ignacio Jerusalem and Manuel de Zumaya, among others. I particularly enjoyed the comic "A cantar un villanico" by Roque Ceruti.

How I Found These

Grove Music Online is *the* reference source for music studies. Most music students will have searched it for a term or composer of interest in the past. But it's also helpful when you're not sure exactly what it is you're looking for, because of the robust browsing and advanced search capabilities. You can browse by place, occupation, time period, etc, and find a list of composers or topics that fit your criteria.
