Listen Wider Challenge 2020

Playlists and Reading Lists for the Listen Wider Challenge

Challenge

4. The cast recording of a musical featuring a queer character.

This week's playlist includes cast recordings of full musicals, so I've only included a few. Each one has also been adapted into a variety of forms (the other versions are linked in the bibliography below). Fun Home was adapted from a autobiographical graphic novel, Hedwig and the Angry Inch was made into a film, and The Color Purple is based on both a book and the film based on the book.

How I Found These

Finding literature or content based on the type of character is sometimes difficult-- there is no single way to tag LGBTQ subjects in the library catalogue. For example, the subject tags for Fun Home (an autobiographical story of the author's coming out and discovery that her father was also gay) include "Lesbians -- Drama" and "Gay fathers," but no general term that could apply to both. In this kind of case, sometimes fan sites are the most useful, especially when researching genres with very active fan cultures. Broadway Musical Home is a fan-focused website with thematic lists, and it includes a helpful list of musicals with prominent queer characters or themes. There is also lots of scholarly work on queer musical theater that could be mined for ideas. There are also great industry sites for research on financial and demographic statistics.
