This week's challenge was a difficult one -- while you can find premiere dates and locations in many sources, it's difficult to begin with a premiere location and then look for the name of the work. For this reason, I decided to focus on works composed by Nigerian composers-- these particular works may not have all had African premieres, but if not, it is likely that some of each composer's works did. All of these works can be thought of as part of the Nigerian art music movement, which often includes the integration of Nigerian elements and instruments with European art music elements. It's an important reminder that the phrases "classical music" and "art music" have to do with how the works function in culture, not with where they're from or even what they sound like.
