June is African American Music Appreciation Month, formerly National Black Music Month, a designation created in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter. It is intended to celebrate the influence of Black music and musicians on the American music scene. This year Black Music Month falls at a particularly fitting time, when the value of the lives of Black Americans is at the forefront of our thoughts. This month, I'll take a break from the Listen Wider Challenge to post playlists of music by Black Americans.
