This challenge could include any music recorded on an independent label, which theoretically could include just about any repertoire. I chose to focus on works that are on independent labels and could arguably be termed "indie classical" -- these are pieces by contemporary composers who are closely involved with the recording of their own works, including Pulitzer-winner Caroline Shaw, Grammy-nominated Missy Mazzoli, and Nico Muhly. Even though these are all contemporary works, I selected examples that point to the interest of modern composers in the music of earlier periods-- all of these refer in their titles, instrumentation, and details, to early music genres and techniques.
Many composers who use independent labels also self-publish their scores, which leads to them being less well-represented in library collections. If you love the music of these composers and would like better access to their scores, let us know!
"Classical music on an independent label" is not necessarily the same as "indie classical music" -- but what exactly is the difference? Why do some classical musicians record on independent labels, when the commercial pressures we associate with pop musicians don't seem as pressing? Is "indie classical" a genre? A style? Defining your terms is an important part of the research process. To start my search, I looked for scholarship on the classical music business and on "indie classical" as a term.
