Understanding and Improving Student Reading Practices: Workshop 1

The reflection questions and slides on this page were presented in a breakout session during the Fall 2022 Opening Day event.  The committee read an extensive list of scholarly articles to better understand and answer the following questions.

  • Do students complete assigned readings?
  • What are some of the reasons students might not complete assigned readings?
  • How can we encourage students to engage in and complete assigned readings?

Reflect on Your Courses

1.  Consider the role of reading in your classroom – what are your expectations and goals?  What role does it play in students learning and success in the course?

2.  Consider HOW students read the assigned texts in your course.  How should students approach the text?  What should they focus on, and how should they think about this material?

3.  What can you do with/for students to help them understand the role of reading in your course as well as HOW to read for your course?

4.  What can you do to increase students’ incentive to read and to read well?
