Find Books

How do I find a call number on the shelf?

Follow these steps when you're looking for a book on the shelf.

  1. Find the correct letter combination. L comes before LA on the shelves.
  2. Look for the number - be sure to look for the whole number. 19 comes before 23 and 23 comes before 2340 (two thousand three hundred forty).
  3. In the last line, first locate the letter and then the decimal. .M371 will come before .M38

Four call numbers arranged in shelf order. Sample call numbers would appear: L 19. M322, LA 23. M38, LA 2340. M371, LA 2340. M38

Request Books Using Interlibrary Loan

When you find a book online or in a bibliography that isn't owned by UWM or another UW System school, you can request it for free using Interlibrary Loan. To find books held by libraries outside the UW System, search for the item in WorldCat or Google Books. Keep the citation information or book record near by. You will use the book record details to fill out the Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) form.

1. Type or paste the title of the article in Search@UW to make sure it is not available at a UW System library. If it's not available,

2. Sign into your Interlibrary Loan Account using your ePanther ID and password.

3. Once logged into your account, choose "Book or Other Loan" to request books or physical media

Main Interlibrary loan menu: Select a New Request.

4. Copy and paste the item details from the WorldCat record or manually enter it from the item's citation into the appropriate ILLiad request form. Fill out all the required fields, this will speed up the process. Please paste the URL of the item in the "Notes" field.
