LibGuide Car Wash Sandbox

This guide has workshop materials and activities from the annual LibGuides Skill Refresh Workshop (the LibGuide Car Wash).

WAVE Accessibility Review Tool

WAVE Tool Tips

  • Open the published version of a guide in one tab (this is the guide you'll test), and open that same guide in editor mode in a second tab.
  • Test page by page on the published version of the guide (not the preview and or the editor interface)
  • For tabbed boxes: treat each tab of content like a it's own page. Run the WAVE tool, then open the next tab of the box and run WAVE again. Do this until you've tested the page with each of the box tabs open.
  • Every time you make a change to the guide, you'll need to refresh the published version and re-run the WAVE tool to confirm your changes improved the accessibility of the guide.
  • Only review published guide pages. Reviewing pages in editing mode will result in false errors.

Known Issues

Known Issues with WAVE Reports

If you've encountered an error that appears to be related to a system default in LibGuides that is not listed below, please email hanoszko@uwm.edu with a screen shot or link to the page where the error is occurring

  • "Redundant Link" alert for the breadcrumbs at the top of the page Redundant link alert beside the navigation breadcrumbs linking to library homepage

    • This is caused by the bread crumb navigation and is an alert, not an error. You do not need to report this issue.

  • "Redundant title text" alert besides icons, especially the "Open Access Icon" Image title alert

    • This is cause by the alt text of an icon image and its title attribute being identical. This alert is specifically being caused by a bug with the way icon assets are managed in the LibGuides system. You do not need to report this issue, a service request has been placed with SpringShare.

  • Contrast errors for Interface elements in LibAnswers FAQ widgets.red contrast error icons for FAQ widget page elements

    • This is caused by LibGuides system defaults, and Heidi is working on a solution.

    • Please report other contrast errors you notice on published pages.

      • Important: Do not use WAVE tool while viewing the LibGuides editor interface. Only review published pages.

  • "A nearby image has the same alt text" --common issue with book cover images

    • This occurs when more than one book asset is listed on a page. Although this is an alert, not an error, it may make the page seem cluttered for people using assistive technologies. Book cover images in LibGuides book assets are considered decorative and do not need alternative text.

    • This is happening because the Bwoker/LibGuides default automatically fills in "Cover Art" as the alt text for book cover images.

    • Recommendation: Select the option to edit the book asset, and delete the text from the Alternative Text field in the bottom right corner of the editing window.

    • Book asset properties window with the alternative text field highlighted
