This guide provides an introduction to Milwaukee-based LGBT resources within the Special Collections Department. The guide is organized thematically by identity considerations and then by themes related to social life, arts and culture, and activism. The designation of these resources as 'Milwaukee-based' might indicate that the theme or content relates to Milwaukee, but more commonly indicates that the creator(s) of the resources (authors, artists, publishers, etc.) are/were based in the Milwaukee-area or had strong ties to the community. We have included primary resources, secondary sources, and materials that might serve as as either or both.
This guide is meant to be an introduction to the types of resources our department preserves related to the LGBT-community of Milwaukee, both past and present. While this guide presents a majority of our holdings, it is not comprehensive. We recommend that researchers begin with this guide but to also utilize their own catalog searching.
Note: The Special Collections department does hold LGBT-related materials created by and relating to communities beyond the Milwaukee area, If your research would benefit from non-local LGBT materials, consider scheduling a Research Consultation with us to get help finding those materials!
