The Coretta Scott King Awards, named for the wife of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., originated at a New Jersey Library Association meeting in 1970. It has been a part of ALA's children's and young adult book awards since the committee that chose the award winners became part of an official American Library Association round table in 1982.
The award titles have expanded and changed over the years, but the focus remains on African American topics emphasizing the ideals of Dr. King. The author or illustrator of each winner must be African American. In other respects, the awards reflect the same standards of excellence used for other ALA awards.
The list is a guide to the CSK books that can be found in our Curriculum collection. The titles link to our online catalog, which will provide more information, including the current availability of the book, and indicate other UW system sources for the book if ours in checked out.
Most call numbers are for copies that can be checked out. (PICT) call numbers are in the Picture Book section. (REF) call numbers are in the CCM Reference area, and do not circulate.
Please note that the author and illustrator are listed individually when the book is the work of two people. If no illustrator is listed, the author is also the illustrator.
For additional information about the award and more complete list of past winners, see (CCM) (REF) Z 1037 .A2 C67 2015, The Coretta Scott King Awards 1970-2014.
