THEATRE 570: Scene Work in Pre-Modern Texts

Finding what an actor might need to prepare to perform

Research for Character Study

Background research for historical performance will often take one of two tracks: scholarly research into the play itself, including literary analysis, genre history, and biographical context; and research into the world of the play, including norms and trends of the time period it's set in. This guide will help you with both types of research, in order to inform your character study and performance of Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer.

All of our research will begin with the text of the play itself, which can be found here:

She Stoops to Conquer playscript

You can also view the play on our National Theatre Collection platform.
