MUSIC 106: Foundations of Music

Session 1 Overview

Our first session will be an introduction to the library and our music collection, including the library catalog, reference sources, and the ways music is organized in the library. We'll focus on practical skills, but this is all related to the big questions you're asking in class:

  • What gets classified as "music" in the library? What gets included in other areas instead?
  • How does what we collect and how we organize it tell you about the ways American universities and libraries understand "music" and musicking practices?
  • What gives an author or creator authority or credibility to write about music?
  • How does a university library decide what material is important or authoritative enough to include?

The videos below cover some of the processes we'll talk about during our session. You may view them to prepare, as review, or if you're unable to attend our session.
