Graduate Students' Guide to the UWM Libraries: Obtaining
Non-UWM
Materials

A guide to library resources for grad students

Non-UWM Resources

If the UWM Libraries does not have an item that you need, the following are other resources that can help you to obtain the item from another library. These services are all free to users, but please be judicious in making your requests

  • UW System Borrowing: Allows users with a valid UWM ID to request, borrow and return materials from the UW System. Requests usually take 3-5 business days. Users may request these materials online and pick them up (and return them) at the Circulation Desk. UWM students and faculty also have access to any UW System library. Use your UWM ePanther ID card to gain entrance and check out materials from any UW System library.

  • Interlibrary Loan: When articles and materials are not available through UW System Borrowing, obtain them by making a request through ILLiad. Last minute?  Students may request articles using the Rush Request Service to receive articles in 24 to 48 hours. For more on ILLiad, see FAQs

  • WorldCat: Search WorldCat to find materials held in libraries across North America and beyond. If UWM Libraries does not hold an item and it is not available through UW System borrowing, you may make Interlibrary Loan requests through WorldCat. Access WorldCat from the UWM Libraries homepage.

  • InfoPass: If an item is not held by UWM Libraries, but is available at another local library, you may be able to obtain the item from that library using an InfoPass. Contact the Research Help Desk to see if an InfoPass may be issued for the item you need. You will need to be present at the time the request is made. (Please be sure to bring your valid UWM ePanther ID card with you.) Once the Infopass approval is issued from the Research Help Desk you will then be able to go to the lending library and check out the item.
