Remember that primary sources, which include artifacts as well as texts, date from the period that you are studying; they are “eyewitness” sources.  Examples of primary sources for early medieval Europe include texts such as chronicles, poems, and law-codes, and artifacts such as pottery, coins, skeletons, or buildings.  It is OK to use as primary sources medieval texts in modern English translations, and to use photographs (but not drawings) of artifacts.
